CHAPTER HISTORY

Picture

DOCUMENTED BY: Continental Elizabeth E. Williams, Chapter Historian (June 1989)

When Dr. Rose Cooper Thomas came to Monmouth County in the 1960s, the ashes of racial turbulence were not yet cold.  Much was being said about the lack of wholesome outlets and recreational facilities for Black youth.  This troubled Dr. Thomas and she began thinking if there was something she could do to provide services for Black youths.  Having lived and worked in New York City, she thought of the Continental Societies, Inc.® and the wonderful work and service being rendered by the New York Chapter.

Dr. Thomas was deeply committed to the service of disadvantaged and underprivileged children and youth. She called together a group of fourteen women, organizing what would become the Continental Societies, Inc.® - North Jersey Shore Chapter.  All fifteen (15) women were fully trained and committed to the National Organization’s obligations, as required of all chapter members to become “Continental Women”. Through the efforts of Dr. Thomas, the North Jersey Shore Chapter was sponsored by the Philadelphia Chapter.

On May 22, 1971, the North Jersey Shore Chapter was chartered at Monmouth College (now Monmouth University) in West Long Branch, New Jersey.  For over fifty years, the North Jersey Shore Chapter continues to be an asset, providing community service to children in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
